Welcome Aboard: Meet Your Captains

Welcome aboard Kavalea! We’re a couple of retired scientists turned full-time sailors, currently living our dream—and figuring it out as we go—aboard our 2020 Leopard 40 catamaran, along with our two salty cats.

Our brand, Come About Sailing, was born the very first time we stepped onto a sailboat. The captain yelled “Come about!” and we just stared blankly—no clue what it meant. (Spoiler: it means to change direction.) At the time, it was a moment of confusion. Now? It feels like a perfect metaphor.

After decades spent in the world of marine science and seafood safety, we traded office and lab gear for life jackets, shifted our heading, and began a whole new chapter on the water. We’re both licensed captains now, navigating this floating lifestyle with equal parts curiosity and coffee.

We’re foodies always on the lookout for coastal culinary gems—or crafting our own sea-inspired dishes from local markets and fresh catches. I’m also a certified yoga teacher, bringing a little balance to life on the waves, one floating pose at a time.
